天皇誕生日(てんのうたんじょうび)	12月23日は、1989年から天皇(てんのう)の誕生日(たんじょうび)を祝(いわ)う国民(こくみん)の祝日(しゅくじゆ)に なりました。日本は、第2次世界大戦後(じたいせんご)、天皇は日本(にほん)の象徴(しょうちょう)となりました。 この日、多くの人々は天皇(てんのう)が住んでおられる東京の皇居(こうきょ)を訪(おとず)れ、天皇の健康(けんこう)と長寿(ちょうじゅ)を願(ねが)います。
Emperor's Birthday	December 23 became a national holiday to celebrate the present Emperor's birthday in 1989. 　Japan became a constitutional monarchy after World War II, and the Emperor is the symbol of the nation. 　On this day, lots of people visit the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, where the Emperor lives, and offer prayers for the Emperor's good health and long life.
大晦日	一年(いちねん)の最後(さいご)の日を「大みそか」と言います。日本人にとって新年(しんねん)をむかえる準備(じゅんび)はとても大切(たいせつ)で、家じゅうの大掃除(おおそうじ)はこの日までにすませます。また、もちをついたりおせち料理(りょうり)を作(つく)ったりしてお正月の準備もします。
Oomisoka	The last day of the year is called Oomisoka in Japanese. To welcome the new year with good feelings, people clean up their house. Preparations for the New Year are to be made by Oomisoka.
